Fresh from the Farm: Lights, Camera, Heirlooms

Posted by Rebecca Bilodeau on Aug 1, 2016 8:00:23 AM

We may think of winter as the season for movies, when the news is abuzz with Oscar speculation. But during the summer months, Boston offers free outdoor movies that are almost as abundant as delicious local greens. You can catch anything from Zootopia to Raiders of the Lost Ark all across town, from the Hatch Shell to Assembly Row. Make sure you have everything you need for your sunset movie picnic by getting it delivered right to your door. Don’t forget the popcorn!

Pizza picnicBoston Organics - Ratatouille Flatbread

Many outdoor films this summer are perfect for kids of all ages (we certainly have some fans of animated flicks here at BO headquarters). The whole family is sure to enjoy the movie even more with a picnic supper, and nothing says summer more than a long evening spent outside, enjoying the flavors of long-season veggies like eggplant, heirloom tomatoes, peppers and squash. Take along a savory Ratatouille Flatbread to keep everyone smiling.

For a date night under the stars, put this Arugula Caprese Salad with Kale Pesto in your basket. The fresh, spicy arugula from Atlas farms is so delicious you won’t want to share it with anyone except your sweetie (and even then it might be hard to pass it over). Multicolored, striated and all-around delicious heirloom tomatoes from Queen’s Greens, one of our new farm partners, make this salad as beautiful as it is tasty, while mozzarella balls and walnuts make this a satisfying light meal.

Boston Organics - Heirloom Tomatoes

If you can’t get enough of sun-ripened tomatoes, you will soon have an outlet for your super-fandom. Heirloom tomatoes are making their premier as an add-on item this summer. So go ahead, make these beauties the stars of every meal. They’re not even divas: they gladly accept center stage roles as sliced toast toppers or participate cheerfully in an ensemble cast such as this spicy Calaloo, Tomato and Chickpea Curry. Check out our seasonal produce add-ons so you never miss the season’s celebrities.

The next big blockbuster will be 5lb boxes of organic wild Maine blueberries. Pre-order your box today so you can enjoy these delicious berries long after the final credits have rolled on blueberry season.

Make sure your movie night has a happy ending with a special dessert. Cubes of sweet, refreshing watermelon are perfect for a picnic—order one that’s just the right size. We revel in berry and stone fruit season, never venturing forth without strawberries or peaches. Or whip up this easy Peach Yogurt Cake with Cinnamon Glaze, perfect to come home to and enjoy with a nice cup of tea to send you off to dreamland and visions of dinosaurs and aliens.
