Throughout the year, Boston Organics’ network of farm partners supplies us with fresh, local produce. These relationships are at the heart of what we do. One special star of the late spring/early summer local season, for more than 15 years, is Atlas Farms, which at the moment is keeping our Boston Organics Community in baby bok choy, leafy lettuces, kale and chard and collard greens. And as the season progresses we'll have summer squash, poblano peppers, fennel and evermore greens!
Based in South Deerfield, Massachusetts, at the heart of the Pioneer Valley, Atlas Farms benefits from 100 acres of some of the most fertile soil in the northeast. The farm’s diversified, organic approach to growing, rather than relying heavily on chemical inputs, helps ensure that farming along the Connecticut River will be able to continue for years to come.
Atlas Farms’ owner, Gideon Porth, likens organic farming to maintaining the health of our beautiful planet earth.
"Chemical farming is like having a headache on the land and taking an aspirin for it instead of getting some rest and being well hydrated and eating a good meal... that general system of farming is destructive to the land,” he says.
In addition to being a productive organic farm, Atlas Farms is also a food hub with a farm store and Market Share program. People in the area, as well as Market Share members are welcome to purchase Atlas’ plants and produce at the store, as well as bread, cheese, meat and other food items produced in the area. In this way, Atlas is helping to connect small growers with consumers.
Boston Organics’ relationship with Atlas helps us to serve as a regional food hub, connecting growers from Massachusetts and the rest of New England with our community.
All of the fruits and vegetables we deliver are grown without synthetic pesticides and are USDA certified organic. Interested in receiving produce that's both organic and locally sourced all year round? Check out our Local Box.
Similar to a CSA or farm share, our Local Box is filled with the best organic produce from local and regional farms and brought right to your door each week. It's the easiest way to eat like a locavore!
