1/4-1/8

With the dawn of 2016, we're reflecting on goals and intentions for the coming year. Whether your New Year’s resolutions include eating locally or simply aiming for five fruits or vegetables, Boston Organics and our regional farm partners are here for you, to help make those commitments easy and fun.

We're getting the year off to a colorful start with jewel-bright golden beets from Winter Moon Farm in Hadley, MA. Michael Docter of Winter Moon will also deliver carrots, celeriac, rutabagas and daikon radishes to be included in this week's boxes. Though sleety weather may make us want to snuggle down in the earth like the potatoes we're getting from Nature's Circle this week, we are grateful to the farmers who continue to bring us hearty vegetables to see us through the season.

Since the winter solstice two weeks ago, we have seen the days slowly, slowly getting longer. A reminder of summer’s flavor can be found in this week’s box in the form of basil from Happy Valley Organics in Whately, MA. The sun is especially important for this grower, whose solar-paneled barns provide power for the greenhouse heating and watering systems that allow him to produce fresh herbs year-round.

Basil and lemon form a nice counterpoint to the savory squash and rich Parmesan in this recipe for Butternut Squash, Lemon and Basil Risotto.
