Here at Boston Organics, our four favorite words are: Local Greens are Back! This is always a fun time of year because it means that we get to share with all of our customers the best that Massachusetts farms have to offer. Perhaps even more than the date on the calendar, the arrival of local greens marks the beginning of summer and the local growing season. In addition to greens, the stone fruit and oyster mushrooms found in this week's boxes are just the ingredients to help you get in the spirit of summer - especially as you start to plan cookouts and summer gatherings.
This week we are receiving our first large shipment from Atlas Farm, one of our oldest farm partners, and we are thrilled. One of the items they are bringing us this week is baby bok choy. If you are looking to try this vegetable for the first time or just looking for a new way to cook it we have just the recipe for you. Grilled Bok Choy with Sweet Soy Glaze is a great way to try out the new soy sauce that we are offering as well as adding a new item to your grilling repertoire.
One of the other great items coming from Atlas Farms this week is romaine lettuce. Romaine is the perfect green for those warm days when you are looking for a crisp refreshing addition to a sandwich or a deep green base for your salad. If you are searching for a new recipe to use this fresh local lettuce look no further than this BLT Avocado Pasta Salad. This will make for a great side dish at your next BBQ or a nice refreshing lunch as the weather starts to heat up
Another new item that is making its way into boxes this week is the donut peach. This fruit has quite a few names, including the flat or Saturn peach, all inspired by its unique squat shape. No matter what you call this peach, its flavor is out of this world. It has a lower acidity than other peaches, and a gene has even been identified called the ‘honey gene’ that gives the donut peach its sweeter taste.
The donut peach’s shape also makes for easier eating by hand because all the flesh is located around the center pit of the fruit. If you are able to resist eating this fruit straight from your Boston Organics box, whip up a batch of Peach Lemonade. Add some lemons to your next delivery and create the a special drink to sip are you enjoy wonderful long summer evenings.
This week also brings us an order of Forest Medley Oyster Mushrooms from Mousam Valley in Maine. They provide us with some excellent mushroom varieties that we do not get to see on a regular basis. The forest medley is the perfect introduction to different oyster mushroom varieties such as Italian, Pink, Katahdin or Butter Oyster mushrooms, each with their own unique taste and color. One great recipe to try with these mushrooms is Clam-Free Chowder. Though it calls for land - rather than sea - grown oysters, this chowder is sure to satisfy.
Have a delicious week!
