As the days get warmer in New England, our farmers’ harvests are getting more luscious! We will be seeing a more local veggies in our produce boxes like kale, lettuce, radishes, herbs, and mushrooms.
Our Dogma Box includes organic fruits and vegetables sourced as close to Boston as possible throughout the year. Similar to a CSA or farm share, this box is filled with the best organic produce from local and regional farms each week.
In early May, Queen's Greens crew finished laying 6 acres (almost 2 full lengths of the Mass Ave bridge!) of remay on their fields. Remay is a cloth like material that protects produce from cold, windy weather, and is a physical barrier against pests. In this week's Dogma box: chives, loveage, and mixed salad greens.
Red Fire Farm's growing and harvesting has been in full swing! This week we're enjoying bunched radish and kale. Their farm store in Granby, MA is open and they have implemented additional health and safety measures to better protect their staff and customers (also accept SNAP/HIP).
Why is it called Red Fire Farm? Ryan Voiland has been farming on the land since 2001. When researching the history of the place and he found that in 1922, a lightning strike fire burned the original barn and farmhouse structures to the ground. Red Fire Farm was named to partly remember that fire event, and also because ‘New Red Fire’ is the name of his favorite red leaf lettuce variety.
We work with Doug Coldwell out at Happy Valley Organics to offer year-round access to potted basil and fresh cut herbs such as rosemary, oregano, and chives.
Happy Valley is committed to powering their operation with renewable energy. Two PV solar installations, built in 2011 and 2017, provide much of the energy necessary for the heating, lighting, and watering systems in the greenhouse. Beyond their greenhouses, their farm property comprises more than 150 acres of organic production.
