If you’re looking to step outside your comfort zone, papayas are a must-try! Native to tropical regions, papayas are a staple fruit in South American and Caribbean cuisines. Occasionally, we carry a limited supply—this week (4/26/21), you’ll find them in our all-fruit, 2/3 fruit, and small boxes!

When ripe, papayas are sweet with a flavor similar to melon. But unripe papaya has little to no taste, so if you cut into one and it’s bland, just wait another day or two.

The Look and Feel of Ripe Papaya

Unripe papayas have skin that’s a blend of green and yellow. As they ripen, they turn a bright yellow and soften slightly. A ripe papaya should yield gently when pressed with your thumb.

To ripen papayas faster, place them in a paper bag with ethylene-producing fruits like apples or bananas. (Source: The Spruce Eats)

Storage Tips

  • Store ripe papayas in the refrigerator to slow ripening.
  • Leftover papaya can be frozen for up to 10 months.
  • Remove seeds and cut the fruit into small pieces before freezing.

You Can Eat the Seeds… In Moderation!

Papaya seeds are edible and can offer digestive benefits. They have a bitter, peppery flavor—similar to mustard or black peppercorns—and are sometimes dried and used as a substitute for ground black pepper.

They’re packed with antioxidants, and have antibacterial and antiviral properties. However, do not eat more than 1 teaspoon at a time, as they may cause an upset stomach. (Source: The Spruce Eats)

Not sure how to enjoy your papaya? Try it in smoothies, fruit salads, salsas, or just eat it fresh with a squeeze of lime. Check out our recipe archive for inspiration!
