How to Create a Bike-Friendly Workplace

Posted by Rebecca Bilodeau on May 15, 2016 12:30:00 PM

Bike commuting is on the rise, with small convoys of cyclists spinning down Boston’s Southwest Corridor Park, along the Esplanade and across the Mass Ave Bridge. Commuters cycle for many reasons: to maintain their health, to save money on gas or public transit, and to limit their environmental impact.

In addition to these benefits to employees, creating an office culture that celebrates cycling creates benefits for employers. Exercise has been shown to increase productivity, and improving employee health through regular activity can mean better attendance. Promoting bike commuting also demonstrates your commitment to the community and environment by helping keep polluting cars off the road and encouraging employee well-being. Check out the steps below to create a bike-friendly workplace.

Happy National Bike to Work Week! This week, bicycle commuters, including a few Boston Organics employees, will celebrate the many benefits of cycling. If you see our cargo bike driver on the road, be sure to give him an extra friendly wave as he delivers your produce. Boxes this week are full of colorful produce, rivaling the brightest fluorescent bike attire. As the weather keeps getting better, we’re sure we’ll see more and more cyclists on the road. We want to keep all members of the Boston Organics Community powered up, regardless of how they choose to get around.

It's Marathon Monday, but today we also commemorate the first shots of the American Revolution, fired at Old North Bridge in Concord. The event was memorialized by Ralph Waldo Emerson in his 1837 poem Concord Hymn: “Here once the embattled farmers stood, /And fired the shot heard round the world.” Honor your modern farmers through your enjoyment of delicious organic produce, and take some bites heard round the world. And if you see our vans this week, feel free to shout out, “The green boxes are coming! The green boxes are coming!”

April is National Poetry Writing Month. We here at Boston Organics are partial to rhyme and alliteration, and employ these and other devices freely as we wax poetic about our favorite subject: organic fruits and veggies.

You’ll see our vans trundling round city blocks,
Bearing the fruits of vines and beanstalks.
Such wonderful loot,
Lots of veggies and fruit;
What goodies will be in my box?

Since the beginning of daylight savings time, longer days have mostly meant longer evenings. The lingering afternoon sun can create a sense of abundance, of light and of time. But it can also be an uncomfortable and awkward season, with unpredictable precipitation and scraps of warmth. How many layers do I need? Darn, should have brought an umbrella.

There's one thing you can count on in this mercurial in-between season: your Boston Organics box will keep things fun, fresh and delicious.

Early spring can be a time of waiting and excitement. Warm days are so close we can taste them and new plants stretch slowly above the soil before the real green explosion begins. It can also be a time for seeking, whether we're looking for the first tiny blooms or chocolate eggs hidden in the yard. Don't worry though, your Boston Organics boxes will still come right to your door, though they contain plenty of produce to get excited about.
