This Thursday, September 22 is the autumn equinox, when day and night are the same length. (Approximately. We're mostly interested in the poetics.) This event marks the beginning of fall, and the ever-decreasing daylight as we head toward the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. The balance of light and dark at the equinox got us thinking about other opposing pairs. Tuesday, February 9th is Mardi Gras, the final day of a season of festivities and feasting. In New Orleans, revelers nosh on King Cake, muffuletta sandwiches, jambalaya and crawfish etoufée to begin the somber season of Lent with a bang. This week, we’re celebrating Mardi Gras New England style! The winter veggies of our northerly latitude merrily don the traditional Mardi Gras colors of green, gold and purple and parade throughout Boston on their green plastic floats.

Who doesn't love this time of year?! While we're looking forward to late fall and all of its leaf-crunching walks, crisp, starry skies, pumpkin carving and warm, spiced beverages, early fall is where it's at. Right now is the perfect time to enjoy gorgeous weather, lighter city crowds and a nearly inexhaustible variety of local, organic produce.
Coming off a weekend with +85°F days, fall sounds more like a verb than an approaching season. And with many of our favorite summer foods still "growing strong," it sure doesn't taste like autumn yet.
But winds of change are in the air, and a few of the local farm partners that bring us the best organic fruits and veggies in the fall are starting to harvest fields that they planted earlier in the summer. While we anticipate a few more weeks of juicy heirloom tomatoes from Atlas Farm and delicious organic eggplants from Kitchen Garden Farm, the apple harvest is already underway at Dwight Miller and Son Orchards.
The organic shallots in this week's Dogma Box come from Emylou Farm, a family-owned organic farm that's been a member of the Deep Root Organic Coop for several years.
