Early summer is a season for thriving. As the weather gets warmer, we will continue to see more and more produce from our farm partners, including hakurei turnips this week. Produce in the field isn't all that's growing; our add-on list is constantly expanding as well. The newest additions to our grocery add-ons include special produce, as well as items that are perfect for the newest additions to your family. Read on to learn about the highlights of this week's boxes.
Heavenly hakurei
Hakurei turnips are a unique variety of turnip with a crisp texture and light, refreshing flavor. They are extremely versatile and can be prepared in many different ways. Enjoy the flavors of early summer by preparing Braised Bok Choy and Hakurei Turnips. You can even substitute the turnip greens for bok choy if you want to use the whole plant. This is a truly local dish, with turnips from Queen's Greens in Amherst, MA and bok choy from Atlas Farm in South Deerfield, MA. taking stalk
We are very excited to offer asparagus from Pedersen Farm in New York as an add-on this week. Pedersen Farms has been in business for over 30 years and transitioned to organics almost 15 years ago. They now have over 600 acres of certified organic land that they harvest many different crops including asparagus. Asparagus can be a difficult crop to grow because it takes 3 years for the plant to mature before it is ready to be harvested. That, combined with the short harvest season in the northeast means that this is an exciting limited-time item that we are sure you will enjoy, especially in this recipe for Asparagus with Creamy Mustard Sauce.
Produce for half-pints
A few weeks ago we wrote about all the new babies that are joining the Boston Organics family. That prompted us to explore baby food options that we could possibly carry. After careful consideration and some taste testing from our smallest members we decided to offer Plum Organics products.
In addition to the tasty flavor options, we like that, like Boston Organics, Plum Organics is a Certified ‘B’ Corp. It is important to us to support other businesses that are dedicated to sustainability, accountability and transparency. We spent quite a few car rides, picnics, and weeknight dinners consulting with our taste testers to help choose the five flavors that are now available as add-on items.
Sweet and savory snacking
Chips and salsa are a classic snack combo. Add a sweet and summery twist with this recipe for Peach and Vidalia Onion Salsa. Wow friends at your next get together or to simply sit back and enjoy as you soak in the longer evenings. Feel free to make tweaks to this recipe to suit your taste buds, whether that means a little more jalapeno for an extra kick or a little more lime for some extra acidity. This is sure to become new favorite.
Have a delicious week!
