Fresh from the Farm: Getting Cozy with Cool Weather Crops

Posted by Rebecca Bilodeau on Oct 2, 2016 2:18:00 PM

After a long, hot summer, the cooler temperatures of the last week have offered something of a reprieve, and an opportunity to pull out our fall jackets, flannel shirts, and woolly socks. It's also a cue for the return of some of our favorite cool (though not yet cold) weather food and drink. Relish the beauty of October in New England with local fruit and vegetables delivered to your door.

Fresh from the Farm and Local Offerings

Since the beginning of daylight savings time, longer days have mostly meant longer evenings. The lingering afternoon sun can create a sense of abundance, of light and of time. But it can also be an uncomfortable and awkward season, with unpredictable precipitation and scraps of warmth. How many layers do I need? Darn, should have brought an umbrella.

There's one thing you can count on in this mercurial in-between season: your Boston Organics box will keep things fun, fresh and delicious.

Fresh from the Farm and Local Offerings

Early spring can be a time of waiting and excitement. Warm days are so close we can taste them and new plants stretch slowly above the soil before the real green explosion begins. It can also be a time for seeking, whether we're looking for the first tiny blooms or chocolate eggs hidden in the yard. Don't worry though, your Boston Organics boxes will still come right to your door, though they contain plenty of produce to get excited about.

Fresh from the Farm and Local Offerings

In the last couple of weeks, we have seen snow flurries and crocuses starting to poke through the earth, fierce winds and gentle sunshine. The weather has been a bit of a tease, yanking us back and forth between winter and spring. Some of the produce in this week's boxes is no different. Read on to learn more about radishes coyly hiding their inner beauty, and grapefruits trying to act like grown-ups.

If March comes in like a lion, it seems this year it will arrive as a sun-warmed, contented lion: the temperatures this week are forecast to be in the 50s. Though this warmth may prove to be transient, it’s a reminder of what will soon come, and is a gentle nudge toward waking up to welcome spring. Like resting perennial plants and waiting seeds, we can use this week's produce to start to stretch towards the sun.

A weekly update from Boston Organics.

Happy Presidents’ Day! In Massachusetts, the holiday officially recognizes George Washington’s birthday, though in other states Abraham Lincoln shares the top billing. Though the founding father is often associated with cherries (and cherry trees), we present a rather different recipe in his honor, as well as some other suggestions for dining and snacking like a boss. We think Mr. Washington would approve.

One Grower's Sweet Fruit in the Fight Against Citrus Greening

Posted by Boston Organics on Jan 28, 2016 1:50:21 PM

Our Florida citrus supplier, Uncle Matt’s, has been sending us exceptional navels, Cara Caras, grapefruit and Minneolas this winter, but bringing you fresh, organic fruit from a region hit hard by a pernicious disease and its insect carrier, the Asian citrus psyllid, has become an increasingly herculean task.

A weekly update from Boston Organics.

For the next month, a very special astronomical phenomenon will be visible in the morning sky—from January 20 to February 20, all five visible planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) can be viewed simultaneously in the wee hours of the morning. If you cast your sights a little closer to home, you may find a few especially bright points in your Boston Organics delivery this week too. We are excited to introduce two new items (Broccolini and kumquats), as well as see the return of Murcott mandarins. Unlike the five bright planets, which were last seen together fifteen years ago, we have only had to go without this tasty citrus since last winter.
