Growth is a year-round concept for Troy Asher, packinghouse manager of Atlas Farm (South Deerfield, MA). But the shorter winter days do bring a bit of an expected slowdown.

For several of the farms that stock our deliveries with local produce and goods, this is still a busy time of year. The winter months are often a time to repair and reassess ahead of the growing season.

Cold winter months aren’t usually what many have in mind when they consider fresh local produce. Snow, sleet, and cold winds are seemingly at odds with the bucolic ideal of fields exploding with fruits and vegetables on balmy days.

Visiting Our Local, Organic Farmers - August 2019
We know you value organic produce for the benefits it has both on your health and the environment. But as a busy Bostononian, you might not have time to visit the source -- the farms. At Boston Organics, we also value transparency in the supply chain and make sure that the food you eat comes from truly sustainable operations.
Every season we like to visit growers that are a part of our network. Not only does this help maintain our strong working relationships, but it also gives us an opportunity to ask questions and see how they continue to make positive changes on their farms.
Earlier this summer, we sent a few members of the Boston Organics Crew to western Massachusetts for a few of these visits. Here’s how our day went.

Our customers do not need to choose the Dogma box to support local farmers. Though there is no legal definition for the term "local", at Boston Organics we take a more regional approach by sourcing much of our local produce from the northeast region (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine).
Let's take a peak into our Standard and Specialty boxes this week to find out which have the most local produce!

Check out these local Boston Food events! The Boston Organics team has compiled a list of local events hosted by organizations we support for you to connect with like-minded individuals.
Boston Organics believes it is in everyone’s best interest to build a strong regional network of growers, distributors and retailers, and we think it's great that more and more people are getting on board with the local movement.
Building a healthy food system isn't a one-(wo)man job and requires constant communication between organizations. We put together this list of local events so you can collaborate, connect, and contribute to the local food system too! Check out these Spring events!

Last week we shared a bit about what a local and sustainable food system means to us and farmers and farm workers are the bedrock of that supply chain. We want to take some time to celebrate and appreciate many of the growers and farm teams that allow us to do the work that we do and to enjoy some of the most delicious organic produce in the region.

This week's box features shiitake mushrooms, which are crazy nutritious but also delicious. If you're a mushroom fan, shiitakes are likely one your list of favorites (they're so much more flavorful and complex than boring white button mushrooms!). You'll encounter shiitakes in various forms in a lot of Asian cuisine, like miso soup and many stirfries. Today we've got a recipe that calls for roasting the mushrooms and we think you're going to love it.
