Peaches, pineapples, plums, pluots oh my! Not to mention nectarines and kiwis both green and gold, now is a good time to be a fruit lover and a Boston Organics customer. In addition to all of those fantastic fruit offerings we are continuing to expand the different vegetables that we are bring to you every week. Summer time in the Boston area really is a great time of the year as more and more of the vegetables are coming from farms within the state and the abundance of fruit would make anyone smile.

With the arrival of the summer solstice last week we can finally announce that summer is here! As we enjoy the abundance of summer sun, the variety of produce in boxes continues to grow as well. With all that sun comes the welcoming of a favorite item, summer squash. On top of that we will continue to offer cherries as an add on and we will have sweet and delicious pea shoots coming to us from Jonathan’s Sprouts. If you didn’t get a chance to order some of the wonderful garlic scapes last week have no fear: they are still available so give them a try. Oyster mushrooms round out the new items that you might see in your delivery and the variety this week is Italian Oyster.

June is the unofficial start of canning season in New England. If you’ve never tried canning your own jams, preserves, or pickles before, there are lots of great resources online to help you get started in preserving the fleeting bounty of the spring and summer seasons. My favorite canning blogger is Marisa McClellan of Food in Jars, who has a very helpful Canning 101 series that covers all of the basics of preserving your own fruits and vegetables.
For those of you who are already familiar with the ways of the canning pot, I’ve assembled some tips to make you a pro of putting up.

Here at Boston Organics, our four favorite words are: Local Greens are Back! This is always a fun time of year because it means that we get to share with all of our customers the best that Massachusetts farms have to offer. Perhaps even more than the date on the calendar, the arrival of local greens marks the beginning of summer and the local growing season. In addition to greens, the stone fruit and oyster mushrooms found in this week's boxes are just the ingredients to help you get in the spirit of summer - especially as you start to plan cookouts and summer gatherings.
