2016 Local Season Recap

Posted by Rebecca Bilodeau on Nov 13, 2016 1:20:00 PM

Boston Organics is grateful to all of our farm partners who supply us with nutritious local produce no matter the season. The days are becoming ever-shorter, the nights colder, and farmers are starting to put the land to bed for the winter. Though their work continues, we are past peak local season in New England. In this slower time, we take a moment to reflect on the growing season, and themes we noticed during our early September visit to Atlas Farm, Lakeside Organics of Hadley and Queen’s Greens, three of our farm partners in Massachusetts’ Pioneer Valley.

Visiting Our Local, Organic Farmers

Posted by Boston Organics on Sep 7, 2015 9:37:54 AM

How much do you know about where your food comes from?

If you buy and eat organic food, you already know quite a lot. For instance, you know that it was grown without synthetic fertilizers and wasn’t sprayed with harmful chemical pesticides. You also know that there are no genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in your food and that the animals that produced your eggs and milk weren’t fed antibiotics. Instead, they were raised in safe, humane conditions.

But as a busy Boston resident, you don’t have time to visit all of the organic farms that grow your food. That’s part of our job, to increase transparency in the supply chain and make sure that the food you eat comes from truly sustainable sources.

We work with a vast network of organic farms, and every season we like to go visit a few of them. Not only does this help maintain our strong working relationship with these organic farmers, it also gives us an opportunity to ask questions and learn new things about modern organic farming practices.

Earlier this summer, we sent a few members of the Boston Organics Crew to southern Vermont and central Massachusetts to visit some of our local farm partners there. Here’s a short recap from each visit.

In the Boston area, the early summer is a fantastic time to get your hands on a variety of locally grown leafy greens. This week, familiar faves like kale and dandelion are joined by more unusual leaves like calaloo and radicchio — all coming from Atlas Farm in central Massachusetts.

The mercurial early summer weather continues to keep our organic farm partners on their toes. Gideon Porth at Atlas Farm reported that the heat caused a few rows of arugula to bolt prematurely, but the plentiful rain helped his early plantings of collard greens grow to full size in time for harvest.

This spring our local farmers faced lengthy dry spells periodically interspersed with heavy rainstorms—making it difficult to predict which fields would need extra attention and which crops would be ready to harvest.
