October is both Fair Trade Month and Non-GMO Month – a reminder for us to pause our busy lives for one moment and to reflect on the current state of our food system. With the school year in full swing and the holiday season quickly approaching, this is a good opportunity to think critically and learn more about the food we eat and where it comes from!

It seems like fall arrived in Boston overnight last week, touching the trees with splashes of gold, turning the sky a clear, cloudless, brilliant blue. The crisp, dry air has us breathing freely, taking a moment to absorb the rich colors of the season. Those same colors can be found in boxes, as Boston Organics brings autumn to your doorstep this week.

Fresh from the Farm: Getting Cozy with Cool Weather Crops
After a long, hot summer, the cooler temperatures of the last week have offered something of a reprieve, and an opportunity to pull out our fall jackets, flannel shirts, and woolly socks. It's also a cue for the return of some of our favorite cool (though not yet cold) weather food and drink. Relish the beauty of October in New England with local fruit and vegetables delivered to your door.

Some things just seem to creep up earlier and earlier each year, from the start of the holiday shopping season to the appearance of spring plants at grocery stores in the depths of winter. One such thing that made a very early return to coffee shops this year was the pumpkin spice latte. A steaming PSL may hit the spot on an autumn morning—warming hands and heart with a burst of nostalgia—but it’s packed full of sugar and artificial flavors. We’ve picked out a few of our favorite fall flavors so that you can enjoy the season—and even indulge a bit—organically.

Tonight is the first debate between presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. This much-anticipated face-off and the hotly contested primaries have dominated the news and conversation for months. Here at Boston Organics, we’re counteracting the stress, tension and noise of the election the best way we know how—cooking with fresh, organic ingredients. A side benefit of this method of coping is that it leaves the Boston Organics Community well-nourished and ready to be engaged citizens, whether by simply voting or getting involved in the campaign for a specific candidate or ballot question.

This Thursday, September 22 is the autumn equinox, when day and night are the same length. (Approximately. We're mostly interested in the poetics.) This event marks the beginning of fall, and the ever-decreasing daylight as we head toward the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. The balance of light and dark at the equinox got us thinking about other opposing pairs. Read on to see how we're bringing together all sorts of opposites in the kitchen using produce from this week's boxes.

We may have put away our white pants for the season, and school may be back in session, but here at Boston Organics, we aren’t quite done with summer. Our farm partners continue to deliver an abundance of warm weather produce, from tomatoes to peppers to corn. And we say bring it! We are always game for more: more summer, more heat (though we’re not talking just about the weather) and more seasonal add-ons, all headed your way in this week’s boxes.

Fresh from the Farm: Celebrating our Farm Partners
Throughout the year, members of the Boston Organics Community are able to enjoy locally grown produce thanks to the effort and expertise of our dedicated farm partners. The relationships our purchasing team has built over the years help bring our customers closer to the source of their food, and help to strengthen our regional food system. Last week, some of our staff had the opportunity to pay a visit to some of these hard-working farmers in western Massachusetts to learn about their operations and even taste some of the delicious produce members of the Boston Organics Community can expect to see in their boxes this week.

Start the School Year Right with Kid and Grown-Up Friendly Lunches
There are plenty of meal-planning resources out there to help busy families make the most of the week's groceries and limited cooking time. Planning meals and even prepping lunches for the week can help limit food waste and remove guesswork from already hectic schedules. But sometimes (or most of the time for many of us) tomorrow is as far ahead as we can think. Minimize the stress of packing a lunch for kids and for yourself (and don't fall into the just another PB&J trap) by making sure you always have these pantry staples on hand so you can make simple, single prep meals that will keep you and kids happy.
